Gout

Gout is a type of arthritis characterized by sudden, sharp, burning pain as well as swelling and redness in the afflicted joint. It is caused by the formation of uric acid crystals within the fluid surrounding joints. The crystals can inflict pain during movement, and resulting inflammation leaves the afflicted areas sensitive to the slightest touch. Although current drugs are effective in managing most symptoms of gout, there are significant numbers of patients who do not respond to or are intolerant of current therapies.
