Hyperuricemia

Hyperuricemia is the presence of abnormally high levels of uric acid in the blood. Elevated levels of uric acid can lead to a profound inflammatory response with resulting pain. In addition to pain, hyperuricemia can result in destructive gouty arthritis, with permanent damage to joints and connective tissue, and chronic renal disease. More recent data associate hyperuricemia with hypertension and vascular disease. Thus the deleterious effects of elevated uric acid are not limited to the joints and kidney.
